Class 10 Maths Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progressions - Complete Solutions

Welcome! Below are detailed, step-by-step solutions for all exercises in Chapter 5 (Arithmetic Progressions) of the NCERT Class 10 Mathematics textbook for MP Board and CBSE students.

Important Formulas for Arithmetic Progressions

  • General Form of an AP: a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, ...
  • Common Difference (d): d = ak+1 - ak
  • n-th Term of an AP (an): an = a + (n - 1)d
  • Sum of First n Terms (Sn): Sn = (n / 2) [2a + (n - 1)d]
  • Alternative Sum Formula: Sn = (n / 2) (a + l), where l = last term = an
  • Arithmetic Mean: If a, b, c are in AP, then b = (a + c) / 2

EXERCISE 5.1

Question 1

In which of the following situations, does the list of numbers involved make an arithmetic progression, and why?

(i) The taxi fare after each km when the fare is Rs 15 for the first km and Rs 8 for each additional km.

Solution:
Taxi fare for 1st km = Rs 15
Fare for 2 km = 15 + 8 = Rs 23
Fare for 3 km = 23 + 8 = Rs 31
Fare for 4 km = 31 + 8 = Rs 39
The list is 15, 23, 31, 39, ...
Since the difference between consecutive terms is constant (d = 8), it forms an AP.

(ii) The amount of air present in a cylinder when a vacuum pump removes 1/4 of the air remaining in the cylinder at a time.

Solution:
Let initial air volume = V
Air removed 1st time = V / 4, remaining air = V - V/4 = 3V/4
Air removed 2nd time = (1/4) × (3V/4) = 3V/16, remaining air = 3V/4 - 3V/16 = 9V/16
The list is V, 3V/4, 9V/16, ...
Common difference = 3V/4 - V = -V/4; 9V/16 - 3V/4 = -3V/16 (not equal).
Since common difference is not constant, it does NOT form an AP.

(iii) The cost of digging a well after every metre of digging, when it costs Rs 150 for the first metre and rises by Rs 50 for each subsequent metre.

Solution:
Cost for 1st metre = Rs 150
Cost for 2 metres = 150 + 50 = Rs 200
Cost for 3 metres = 200 + 50 = Rs 250
The list is 150, 200, 250, ...
Since common difference d = 50 is constant, it forms an AP.

(iv) The amount of money in the account every year, when Rs 10000 is deposited at compound interest at 8% per annum.

Solution:
Amount after year 1 = 10000(1 + 8/100)1 = 10800
Amount after year 2 = 10000(1 + 8/100)2 = 11664
Amount after year 3 = 10000(1 + 8/100)3 = 12597.12
The differences between terms are 800, 864, 933.12, which are not constant.
Hence, it does NOT form an AP.

Case 2: d = -1/2, a = 5 ⇒ S16 = (16/2)[10 + 15(-1/2)] = 20.

Question 3

Ladder rungs decrease from 45 cm to 25 cm. Distance between top and bottom rungs is 2 1/2 m = 250 cm. Rungs are 25 cm apart.
Solution: Number of rungs n = (250 / 25) + 1 = 11.
Total length of wood = (11 / 2)(45 + 25) = (11 / 2)(70) = 385 cm.

Question 4

Houses numbered 1 to 49. Sx - 1 = S49 - Sx.
Solution: [ (x - 1) x ] / 2 = [ (49 × 50) / 2 ] - [ x(x + 1) / 2 ]
⇒ (x2 - x) + (x2 + x) = 2450 ⇒ 2x2 = 2450 ⇒ x2 = 1225 ⇒ x = 35.

Question 5

Terrace with 15 steps, each 50 m long, 1/4 m rise, 1/2 m tread.
Solution: Volume of 1st step = 50 × (1/4) × (1/2) = 25/4 m3.
Step volumes form AP: 25/4, 50/4, 75/4, ... up to 15 terms.
Total Volume = (15 / 2)[ (25/4) + (375/4) ] = (15 / 2)(100) = 750 m3.
