Q1. Find the area of a sector of a circle with radius 6 cm if angle of the sector is 60°.

Solution:
Given: Radius of circle (r) = 6 cm, Angle of sector (θ) = 60°.
Area of sector = (θ / 360°) × πr2
= (60° / 360°) × (22 / 7) × 6 × 6
= (1 / 6) × (22 / 7) × 36
= (22 × 6) / 7 = 132 / 7 cm2.
Answer: The area of the sector is 132/7 cm2 (or 18.86 cm2).

Q2. Find the area of a quadrant of a circle whose circumference is 22 cm.

Solution:
Circumference of circle = 2πr = 22 cm
2 × (22 / 7) × r = 22 ⇒ r = 7 / 2 cm.
Angle of a quadrant (θ) = 90°.
Area of quadrant = (90° / 360°) × πr2
= (1 / 4) × (22 / 7) × (7 / 2) × (7 / 2)
= 77 / 8 cm2.
Answer: The area of the quadrant is 77/8 cm2 (or 9.625 cm2).

Q3. The length of the minute hand of a clock is 14 cm. Find the area swept by the minute hand in 5 minutes.

Solution:
Length of minute hand (r) = 14 cm.
Angle swept in 60 minutes = 360°.
Angle swept in 5 minutes (θ) = (360° / 60) × 5 = 30°.
Area swept in 5 minutes = (θ / 360°) × πr2
= (30° / 360°) × (22 / 7) × 14 × 14
= (1 / 12) × (22 / 7) × 196
= 154 / 3 cm2.
Answer: The area swept by the minute hand is 154/3 cm2 (or 51.33 cm2).

Q4. A chord of a circle of radius 10 cm subtends a right angle at the centre. Find the area of the corresponding: (i) minor segment (ii) major sector. (Use π = 3.14)

Solution:
Given: r = 10 cm, θ = 90°.
(i) Area of minor sector = (90° / 360°) × 3.14 × 10 × 10 = (1 / 4) × 314 = 78.5 cm2.
Area of triangle = (1 / 2) × base × height = (1 / 2) × 10 × 10 = 50 cm2.
Area of minor segment = Area of minor sector - Area of triangle = 78.5 - 50 = 28.5 cm2.
(ii) Major sector angle = 360° - 90° = 270°.
Area of major sector = (270° / 360°) × 3.14 × 10 × 10 = (3 / 4) × 314 = 235.5 cm2.
